Kidney Kharab Hone Ke Lakshan: 10 Early Warning Signs

Kidney Kharab Hone Ke Lakshan: 10 Early Warning Signs

Kidney Kharab Hone Ke Lakshan: 10 Early Warning Signs

Your kidneys are quiet workers. They clean your blood, balance your body’s water and salts, and keep your blood pressure steady — all without ever asking for attention. That’s exactly why kidney trouble is so easy to miss: shuruaat mein koi khaas takleef nahi hoti (there’s often no clear symptom early on).

By the time the signs are obvious, a lot can already have changed. So the smartest thing you can do is learn the early lakshan (signs) — and get a simple test done before you wait for them. Let’s walk through what to watch for, in plain language.

Key Takeaways

  • Early kidney problems often have no symptoms — that’s why they’re missed. A simple blood + urine test finds them earlier than any symptom will.
  • The most common early lakshan include swelling (sujan) in the feet, ankles or under the eyes, foamy urine, unusual tiredness, and changes in how often you pass urine.
  • Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two biggest causes of kidney damage in India — if you have either, get an annual urine albumin (ACR) test.
  • Red-flag signs — very little urine, breathlessness, blood in urine, or severe swelling — need a doctor immediately, not home remedies.
  • Ayurveda traditionally uses herbs like Punarnava, Gokshura and Varuna to support healthy kidney function — never as a cure for kidney disease.

Pehle samajhein: kidney kaam kya karti hai?

Think of your two kidneys as a pair of highly precise filters. Every day they clean roughly 180 litres of blood, pull out waste products like creatinine and urea, remove extra water and salt as urine, and quietly manage your blood pressure, your body’s acid balance, and even the signal that makes red blood cells.

When they slow down, waste starts building up in the blood and fluid starts holding in the body. The lakshan below are simply your body telling you that filtering isn’t happening as smoothly as it should.

Kidney kharab hone ke 10 lakshan (early warning signs)

1. Sujan — swelling in feet, ankles, or under the eyes

When kidneys can’t remove enough salt and water, fluid holds in the body. The classic clue is puffy feet and ankles by evening, or puffiness under the eyes in the morning (aankhon ke neeche sujan). Tight shoes or rings can be an early hint.

2. Foamy or bubbly urine

Urine that looks frothy and takes several flushes to clear can mean protein is leaking through the kidney filters (proteinuria) — often one of the earliest visible signs, sometimes years before other tests change.

3. Changes in urination

Passing urine more often at night, a sudden drop in the amount of urine, difficulty passing it, or a change in colour (dark, tea-coloured, or blood-tinged) all deserve attention.

4. Constant tiredness and weakness

Healthy kidneys signal the body to make red blood cells. When they struggle, that signal weakens and you can become anaemic — leaving you tired, weak, breathless on stairs, and unable to concentrate (kamzori aur thakan).

5. Itchy, dry skin

A build-up of waste and mineral imbalance in the blood can cause persistent itching (khujli) and very dry skin that doesn’t settle with moisturiser.

6. Poor appetite and a metallic taste

Waste accumulating in the blood can dull your appetite, cause nausea, and leave a metallic taste in the mouth — food may start tasting different.

7. Puffy face and swollen eyes on waking

Beyond the feet, fluid can show up as a puffy face first thing in the morning — a common, easily-overlooked early sign.

8. Muscle cramps

Imbalances in calcium, phosphorus and other minerals managed by the kidneys can trigger frequent leg cramps, especially at night.

9. Breathlessness

Extra fluid can collect around the lungs, and anaemia reduces oxygen delivery — both can leave you unusually short of breath.

10. Trouble sleeping and difficulty concentrating

When waste isn’t cleared well, sleep can suffer and the mind feels foggy. Poor sleep and kidney strain often feed each other.

Important: Any one of these can have many other, harmless explanations. The point isn’t to panic over a single symptom — it’s to notice a pattern, especially if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, and get a simple test done.

Kis ko zyada dhyan dena chahiye? (Who is at higher risk)

Get your kidneys checked regularly if you have any of these:

  • Diabetes — the single biggest cause of kidney damage in India.
  • High blood pressure (BP).
  • A family history of kidney disease.
  • Age over 50, or long-term use of painkillers (NSAIDs).
  • Obesity, heart disease, or a history of kidney stones/repeated urine infections.

The Ayurvedic perspective

Ayurveda understands urine formation and filtration through the mutravaha srotas — the channels that form and carry urine. Sluggish filtering and swelling are often linked to aggravated Kapha and Vata and the accumulation of ama (metabolic residue). The classical approach is gentle mutrala (diuretic) and shothahara (anti-swelling) support, while protecting agni (digestive fire).

Herbs traditionally associated with kidney and urinary wellness include:

  • Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): Its name means “renewer.” Described in the Charaka Samhita as shothahara, it is one of the most widely used herbs for healthy fluid balance.
  • Gokshura (Gokhru / Tribulus terrestris): A classic mutrala herb, traditionally used to support smooth urinary flow.
  • Varuna (Crataeva nurvala): Named in classical texts for supporting the urinary system.
  • Chandraprabha Vati: A classical compound used in Ayurveda for urinary and kidney wellness.

These herbs are traditionally used to support normal kidney and urinary function as part of a wellness routine. They do not cure, treat or reverse kidney disease, and are never a replacement for medical care.

Practical steps to look after your kidneys

  1. Control the root cause. If you’re diabetic or hypertensive, keeping your blood sugar and BP in your doctor’s target range is the single most protective thing you can do.
  2. Cut the salt properly. The biggest sources aren’t the salt shaker — they’re pickles, papad, namkeen, chips, packet masalas and sauces. Cook with less and taste before re-salting (WHO suggests under 5 g salt a day).
  3. Drink water sensibly. Steady hydration through the day, urine a pale straw colour. If you already have swelling or reduced kidney function, follow the fluid limit your doctor sets instead.
  4. Stop routine painkillers. Regular unsupervised NSAIDs are hard on the kidneys — ask your doctor for a safer option.
  5. Choose kidney-gentle foods. Bottle gourd (lauki), ash gourd (petha), cucumber, apple and cabbage suit most routines; go easy on very high-potassium or heavily processed foods if your doctor has flagged them.
  6. Move daily, avoid tobacco, limit alcohol. 30 minutes of brisk walking most days supports both sugar and BP.

Building a kidney-care routine alongside your doctor? Cureayu CreatiCare is formulated with traditional kidney-supporting herbs such as Punarnava and Gokshura, intended to help maintain already-healthy creatinine levels and support normal kidney function as part of a balanced lifestyle. It is a supportive supplement, not a treatment for kidney disease — please use it alongside, never instead of, your doctor’s advice and any prescribed medication. Explore CreatiCare →

When to see a doctor (der mat karein)

See a doctor promptly if you have: severe or spreading swelling, breathlessness, a marked drop in urine output, blood in the urine, or persistent nausea and loss of appetite. If you have diabetes or high BP and haven’t had a urine albumin test in the last year, book one now.

The workup is simple and standard: a blood test for creatinine and eGFR, a urine test (for protein/albumin), your blood pressure and sugar, and sometimes a kidney ultrasound. Catching a problem early gives you the most time — and the most options — to protect your kidneys.

FAQ

Q: Kidney kharab hone ke shuruaati lakshan kya hain?

Shuruaat mein aksar koi lakshan nahi hote. Jab dikhte hain, to sabse common hain — pairon aur aankhon ke neeche sujan, jhaagdar peshab (foamy urine), bahut thakan aur kamzori, aur peshab ki matra ya rang mein badlav. In par dhyan dein aur doctor se simple blood-urine test karwayein.

Q: Kaise pata karein ki kidney theek hai ya nahi?

The only reliable way is testing — a blood creatinine + eGFR and a urine albumin (ACR) test. Symptoms alone can’t confirm it, because early kidney strain is often silent.

Q: Kya kidney kharab hone ke lakshan wapas theek ho sakte hain?

It depends on the cause. When the trigger is temporary (dehydration, infection, a painkiller), things often improve once it’s addressed. When diabetes or BP is behind it, controlling those can slow or stabilise the damage. Early action matters most — so testing early is key.

Q: Kya Ayurvedic dawa se kidney theek ho jati hai?

No. Ayurvedic herbs like Punarnava, Gokshura and Varuna are traditionally used to support healthy kidney and urinary function — they do not cure or reverse kidney disease. Use them as part of a wellness routine with your doctor’s knowledge, never as a replacement for medical care.

Q: Sujan (swelling) hamesha kidney ki wajah se hoti hai?

Not always. Swelling can come from the heart, liver, thyroid, long standing, or certain medicines too. But swelling along with foamy urine or puffy eyes is a combination worth getting a urine test for.

Q: Kidney ki jaanch kaunsa test batata hai?

A Kidney Function Test (KFT) measuring creatinine, urea (BUN) and eGFR from blood, plus a urine routine/ACR test. Your doctor may add a blood-pressure check, sugar test and ultrasound.
